What is silicomanganese and what are its uses?

Siliconmanganese alloy is an alloy composed of manganese, silicon, iron and a small amount of carbon and other elements, is a more versatile, large production of iron alloy.

Manganese-silicon alloy is a compound deoxidizer commonly used in steelmaking, and a reducing agent for the production of low-carbon ferromanganese and electro-silicon thermal method of producing manganese metal.

Manganese and silicon are the main alloying elements used in carbon steels. Manganese is one of the most important deoxidisers in the steelmaking process and is required for almost all steel grades.

Because the oxygen product generated when using manganese to deoxidise has a low melting point and is easy to float; manganese can also increase the deoxidising effect of strong deoxidisers such as silicon and aluminium. All industrial steels need to add a small amount of manganese as a desulphurising agent, so that the steel can be hot rolled, forged and other processes without fracture, manganese is also the most important alloying element in each steel type, in the alloy steel will also add more than 15% of manganese to increase the structural strength of steel.

Silicon is the most important alloying element after manganese in pig iron and carbon steel. In steel production, silicon is mainly used as a deoxidising agent for molten metal or as an alloying additive to make steel stronger and improve its properties. Silicon is also an effective stonewashing agent, turning the carbon in cast iron into free stonewashed carbon. Up to 4% silicon is added to standard grey cast iron and ductile iron. And large amounts of manganese and silicon are added to the steel in the form of ferroalloys: ferromanganese, silicomanganese and ferrosilicon.
