Manganese silicon is mainly used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in steelmaking to eliminate excessive oxygen and sulfur in molten steel and improve the quality and performance of steel. One is used as a deoxidizer. In steelmaking, oxygen blowing and other methods are used to decarbonize hot iron and remove harmful impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur. This process will increase the oxygen content in liquid steel, and too high oxygen content will reduce the mechanical properties of steel. The process of removing oxygen from the liquid steel is called deoxidation by adding elements which have a stronger binding force with oxygen than iron and whose oxides are readily expelled from the liquid steel in the form of slag.

The silicon and manganese in the silicon manganese alloy have a strong affinity with oxygen. When the silicon manganese alloy is used in steelmaking, the resulting deoxidation products MnSiO3 and MnSiO4 melt at 1270℃ and 1327℃ respectively. They have the advantages of low melting point, large particles, easy floating and good deoxidation effect.

Silicon can significantly improve the elasticity and magnetic conductivity of steel, so in the smelting of structural steel, tool steel, spring steel and transformer silicon steel, silicon alloy should be used; The content of silicon in general steel is 0.15%-0.35%, that in structural steel is 0.40%-1.75%, that in tool steel is 0.30%-1.80%, that in spring steel is 0.40%-2.80%, that in stainless acid-resistant steel is 3.40%-4.00%, and that in heat-resistant steel is 1.00%-3.00%. Silicon steel contains 2%-3% or more silicon.

Manganese can reduce the brittleness of steel, improve the hot working property of steel, and increase the strength, hardness and abrasion resistance of steel. "No manganese does not make steel", the steel industry consumes manganese accounts for more than 90% of its output. Manganese is an indispensable functional basic raw material for the production of high-quality iron and steel. It can remove impurities such as sulfur and oxygen in the process of steel making, and improve the physical properties of steel by improving the strength, hardness and abrasion resistance. At present, no other element can replace manganese in the process of steel production.
