Brief introduction:

Iron zirconium is an iron alloy composed of zirconium, iron, silicon and aluminum. Iron zirconium used for steelmaking is ferrosilicon zirconium, containing Zr15% ~ 45%, Si30% ~ 65%. The products made by aluminothermic method are called zirconium aluminum iron because they contain aluminum, and contain Zr>15%.

Zirconium is a rare metal. It is a carbide forming element. In the steelmaking process, zirconium is a powerful deoxidizing and denitrifying element. Zirconium can refine the austenite grains of steel. It can be combined with sulfur to synthesize zirconium sulfide, so it can prevent the hot brittleness of steel. Zirconium also has the advantages of reducing the strain aging phenomenon of steel and improving the low temperature toughness of steel. The role of zirconium in cast iron is similar to that of titanium. It can form zirconium carbide and combine with sulfur to form sulfides. Promotes the formation of graphite during cooling. A small amount of zirconium is beneficial to the graphitization of white cast iron and makes the white cast iron gray. Shorten the annealing time when producing ductile cast iron.

Frequently used zirconium-iron alloys, aluminum-zirconium-iron alloys and silicon-zirconium alloys. They have several grades. Low grade alloys contain Zr 5-8% and Si 40-45%; medium grade alloys contain Zr 12-15% and Si 39-43%; high grade alloys contain Zr 35-40% , Si 47-52%, the rest is Fe or Al. There is also a patented composite alloy that contains less than 10% Zr and also contains Mn, Al, Si, Ti and other elements. The Zr content of the nickel-zirconium alloy is 30% or 70%. Ferro-zirconium produced by remelting metal Zr and scrap steel is a more commonly used product, with a Zr content of 40-90%. Because zirconium is one of the strongest deoxidizers for steelmaking and the special role of zirconium in steel, ferro zirconium is used as a deoxidizer and alloy additive for special purpose high-temperature alloys, low-alloy high-strength steels, ultra-high-strength steels and cast irons. It was then used in atomic technology, aviation manufacturing, and radio technology. The method of refining composite Si-containing alloy can be used to refining ferrosilicon and zirconium.
