The main use of petroleum coke

Petroleum coke is mainly used for pre-baking anode and anode paste of electrolytic aluminum, carbon industry production of carbon agent, graphite electrode, smelting industrial silicon and fuel.

According to the structure and appearance of petroleum coke, petroleum coke products can be divided into needle coke, sponge coke, pellet coke and powder coke 4 kinds: (1) needle coke, with obvious needle structure and fiber texture, mainly used for high power and ultra-high power graphite electrode in steelmaking. Due to the strict quality requirements of needle coke in sulfur content, ash, volatile matter and true density, the production process and raw materials of needle coke have special requirements. (2) sponge coke, high chemical reactivity, low impurity content, mainly used in aluminum smelting industry and carbon industry. (3) Pellet coke or spherical coke: spherical shape, diameter 0.6-30mm, generally produced by high sulfur, high asphaltene residue, can only be used for power generation, cement and other industrial fuel. (4) coke: produced by fluidized coking process, its fine particles (diameter 0.1-0.4mm), high volatile content, high thermal expansion coefficient, can not be directly used for electrode preparation and carbon industry.

According to the sulfur content, it can be divided into high sulfur coke (sulfur content above 3%) and low sulfur coke (sulfur content below 3%). Low sulfur coke can be used as anodic paste and prebaked anodes for aluminum plants and graphite electrodes for steel plants. The high quality low sulfur coke (sulfur content less than 0.5%) can be used to produce graphite electrode and carbonizer. Low-sulfur coke of general quality (sulphur content less than 1.5%) is often used in the production of pre-baked anodes. The low quality petroleum coke is mainly used for smelting industrial silicon, silicon carbide and the production of anode paste. High-sulfur coke is commonly used as fuel for cement plants and power plants.

Calcined petroleum coke: calcined petroleum coke must be calcined in order to make petroleum coke (raw coke) suitable for graphite electrode used in steelmaking or anode paste (melt electrode) used in aluminum and magnesium production. The calcination temperature is generally about 1300℃, the purpose is to remove the volatile petroleum coke as far as possible. In this way, the hydrogen content of petroleum coke remanufactured products can be reduced, the graphitization degree of petroleum coke can be improved, and the high temperature strength and heat resistance of graphite electrode can be improved, and the conductivity of graphite electrode can be improved. Calcined burning is mainly used in the production of graphite electrode, carbon paste products, emery, food grade phosphorus industry, metallurgical industry and calcium carbide, among which the graphite electrode is the most widely used. Coke without forging can be directly used as calcium carbide main material, silicon carbide and boron carbide as grinding materials. It can also be directly used as blast furnace coke or blast furnace wall lining brick in metallurgical industry, and can also be used as dense coke in casting process.
