The basic principle of smelting high carbon ferrochrome in electric furnace is to reduce chromium and iron oxide in chromite with carbon. The initial temperature of reduction of chromium oxide to cr2c2 is 1373k, that of Cr7C3 is 1403k and that of chromium is 1523k. Therefore, it is chromium carbide rather than metallic chromium. The carbon content in ferrochrome depends on the reaction temperature. High carbon carbides are easier to form than low carbon carbides.
