Ferro Calcium Silicon (FeCaSi) is a ternary alloy composed of iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), and silicon (Si). It is widely used in the steelmaking and casting industries due to its excellent deoxidizing, desulfurizing, and inoculating properties. This alloy plays a crucial role in improving the quality and performance of steel and cast iron by modifying inclusions and enhancing mechanical properties.

Ferro Calcium Silicon typically contains:

Calcium (Ca): 10–30%

Silicon (Si): 50–60%

Iron (Fe): Balance

The alloy is produced in submerged arc furnaces by reducing silica (SiO₂) and lime (CaO) with carbonaceous materials (such as coke or coal) in the presence of iron scrap or iron ore. The high-temperature smelting process ensures the formation of a homogeneous alloy with controlled calcium and silicon content.

Powerful Deoxidizer:

Calcium and silicon have a strong affinity for oxygen, making FeCaSi highly effective in removing dissolved oxygen from molten steel, thus preventing porosity and improving steel cleanliness.

Desulfurization Capability:

Calcium reacts with sulfur to form calcium sulfide (CaS), which is removed as slag, reducing sulfur content and enhancing steel ductility and toughness.

Inoculation in Cast Iron:

In cast iron production, FeCaSi promotes graphite nucleation, leading to finer graphite flakes or spheroidal graphite structures, which improve machinability and mechanical strength.

Modification of Non-Metallic Inclusions:

The alloy helps transform harmful alumina (Al₂O₃) inclusions into low-melting-point calcium aluminates, improving steel flowability and reducing nozzle clogging in continuous casting.
